If I had the opportunity to give a Nobel Prize to someone in the book, I would give it to Nancy Jaax. She deserves this prize because of her dedication to work and persevering through the adversities she faces at the Institute. For Instance, one of the great horrors she has to go through is when, "She glanced down. Her glove. It was drenched in blood, but now she saw the hole. It was a rip across the palm of the outer glove on her right hand. Nancy tore off the glove. Now her main suit glove was covered with blood. It spidered down the outer sleeve of her space suit. Great, just great--Ebola blood all over my suit…. “HOLE.” Johnson bent over and inspected her glove…. She saw his face erupt in surprise… That terrified her." (Preston 87-88). This quote shows how afraid Nancy was after she thought she was infected. Yet, after facing this danger, she returns back to the Institute to work on level 4 hot agents. This shows her courage and bravery. Nancy Jaax proves her dedication to the military when she puts her work ahead of her family, "Then Jerry broke the news to her about her father. Nancy was beginning to feel extremely guilty about not going home to be with him as he lay dying. She felt the tug of her last obligation to him. She wondered is he should bag this monkey thing and fly to Kansas. But she felt that it was her duty to go through with the operation. She decided to take a chance that her father would live awhile longer." (Preston 282). This quote displays Jaax’s dedication to her work. She had to make great sacrifices for her work. She did not visit her father when he was in such a terrible situation in order to finish her duty. This sacrifice is admirable. Therefore, I believe that Nancy Jaax should win the Nobel Prize.
